I'm reading Graceling because of you, Ari. IDK, but I've always loved this fanart. AND FJKSAHKJAS IT IS SO GOOD. And I love the art even more now. You always make justice to characters I love, and I love you for that.
I highly recommend the other two books - they don't follow on directly from Graceling, and they aren't action-adventure books either, but they both have the most exquisitely heartbreaking character development, which, imho, is where Cashore excels. I hope you get a chance to read them soon :) *loves the Graceling Realms trilogy so much*
When I have the chance no doubt I'll get them! One of the most appealing things of the first books were the character itself and the flowing prose of the author. Reeeeally looking forward to this books (8
There isn't much fanart of them (or the rest of Kristin Cashore's books), but there is some really amazing stuff out there. I'm actually currently in the process of trying to draw Fire, it's really tricky trying to draw someone who's meant to be insanely beautiful XD
Hmm yea, I randomly stumbled upon her books at my book store here in my little town, and thought why not. But I didn't ever think there'd be so much fanart. There's more than I would have ever expected. But everyone's idea of Po and Katsa is different. Like some draw her with long hair, some draw with short-ish, or just, super super short. I can't draw that short due to it just feels unatural to my hand. But with Fire, I have no idea who she is.... lol Kinda sorta, but I haven't read "Fire" yet. I've seen fanart of her, but my best suggestion is to look up art in the style you draw, whether it's anime or realism, and look for the most beautiful ladies, and get ideas from that!
Definitely - once I sort out my headcannon for Dellian culture and clothes :)
Um, can I ramble at you?
Since the Dells are geographically completely separate from the Seven Kingdoms I figure their clothing, etc. would look completely different from the quasi-medieval European Seven Kingdoms. I'm just not yet sure what their clothing *would* look like.
I don't suppose you have any ideas? I initially thought of something similar to Renaissance Italy, because that's where violins originally came from, but that would be whitewashing Dellian culture and I don't want to do that.
Tang Dynasty China seems appropriate too (because that's when the Erhu, which is similar to the violin, emerged, and also because it was something of a golden age) but from what we've seen of Dellian beliefs/traditions it seems very little like Tang China - thought they did both burn the dead.
The Vijayanagara Empire also seems like it could work really well, as there was lots of fine arts and architecture and literature at the time, but I can find very few references for the clothing they wore then, which doesn't help me work out what Fire should wear.
TLDR: I'm probably thinking about this too much, and I should probably just make up random clothes for Fire, but I really can't get my head around what she should wear and I thought I'd ask you how you picture her, since you are thoughtful and clever :)
(Wow, that was a really long ramble, I'm sorry I put you through it, thank you for reading!)
Those are cool ideas! I have made some edits of them, and I sometimes use Qarthian clothing, I dunno if you've seen Game of Thrones or read ASOIAF but the clothing there seems a bit less European than the clothing in the rest of the areas of the Game of Thrones world. I've also used some caps from Sinbad (the version with Elliot Knight), because I do like their outfits in that show.
Another thing that would be interesting would be to model Dellian clothing after the clothing of a specific African culture. Of course, there are toooooooooooooons of different ethnicities within Africa, and within these ethnicities, clothing styles must have changed over time... so I think you'd have to narrow this down quite a lot to something more specific, but that could be neat, maybe?
I dunno, I think there are a lot of options. I love Fire a lot, she's one of my favorite characters, and it's sad that so much of the artwork of her is whitewashed.
Thank you for all the ideas! There is so much to choose from which is heaps of fun :)
I do read/watch ASOIAF, though I didn't think much about Quarthian clothing before. I haven't watched Sinbad but it certainly looks very pretty.
I think Fire is my favourite Cashore heroine, her life could have easily been a complete tragedy but she pulls through it all anyway, she's so strong it's amazing <3 And I agree, it's very very sad she gets whitewashed so often (something that I think is not helped by the book covers). Clearly the solution is to make fanart XD
Don't say you don't have artistic talent! I very firmly believe that anyone who can judge for themselves what they like in an artwork, can become a good artist. It just takes practice and working out what that suits you, be it pencil sketches, or colouring, or manips, or graphic design, or whatever :)
I tend to visualize the Lienids as fantasy Arabian pirates (because of the gold jewelry and the crazy colour names and the fact that half of them seem to be sailors and the way that folks in the other kingdoms can be a bit prejudiced against them). So yeah, Sinbad is pretty much what I was going for (though I have not actually seen the TV series).
